Mancozeb is a coordination product of zinc ion and manganese ethylene bisdithiocarbamate. It is a multi-site fungicide for use against black spot, rust and other rose fungi. Being a multi-site fungicide, means it works in several different ways to prevent fungal infections. Mancozeb was developed for use on vegetable crops and is a relatively safe fungicide when handled according to label instructions. It carries a Caution label. Logan Shillinglaw and Robbie Tucker in their American Rose Society Magazine ads recommend mancozeb in combination with Banner Maxx for the best black spot control.
Mancozeb is the color of mustard but with a thinner consistency. Always add the Mancozeb to the water already in your sprayer. MIX WELL. MIX WELL. Before you spray, MIX WELL AGAIN and several times during the spraying procedure. Clean your sprayer when you are finished and look for any yellow/brown residue, yellow color in the water or yellow/brown particles. Make sure your sprayer is clean for the next time.
Mancozeb is one of several dithanes or dithiocarbamates on the market today. It should be rotated with other fungicides with a different mode of action. Be very careful that you do not rotate it with another dithane as some others have done. Use a single site fungicide such as Banner Maxx in the rotation.
Remember, Mancozeb is a preventative, once you have black spot, it will not kill it. It, along with Daconil 2787, is the foundation of my multi-site fungal protection program. |
